In January, 1966, Senseis Al Bartlinski Sr. & Jr. began taking karate lessons from Sensei Francisco Esteban Conde. After in excess of 1,000 classroom hours and extensive independent practice, they were awarded the black belt in July, 1968. In 1971, the father/son team established the Martial Art of Karate, Inc. (trading as A.J. Bartlinski’s Karate Supercenter).
In 1979, they were asked to teach and coach the United States Naval Academy Karate program. During their 10-year tenure, they developed a winning competition team.
They were the first martial arts school in the area to teach martial arts to children under the age of 10. Then in the late 1990s, they were the first area martial arts school to teach children starting at age three.
Sensei, Sr. is now retired; leaving the program under the guidance of Sensei, Jr.
Sensei, Jr. devotes much of his martial arts time to developing instructors, improving the curriculum, and overseeing and directing all business operations. And yes, he still works out five to six days per week.
